Van Straaten & Havey Mill - View original post

According to HiddenCity: “Van Straaten & Havey, the elegant silk yarn mill built in 1919 and a centerpiece of the Wayne Junction National Historic District and featured recently by the Hidden City Daily as one of the city’s most vulnerable mills, is likely to be torn down, pending a Rule 106 review. That review, necessitated by the use of federal (HUD) funds for the demolition, is unlikely to reverse the demolition permit.”

Ajax Metal Co. - View original post

According to Plan Philly: “Developer Michael Samschick hopes to transform the former Ajax Metal Works, at Frankford and Delaware avenues in Fishtown, into a 3,000-person music venue, a bowling alley, two restaurants and a distillery.”

One building is sent to Death Row and another gets a possible new life.

Quickie: Abandoned Warehouse, Richmond, Northeast Philly

I love it when I can poke my camera in through a hole in the wall.

Pointe-du-Moulin Grain Mill, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

I am away on vacation, but I couldn’t resist shooting some huge Ruin Porn sitting in the middle of a big Montreal Tourist area.

Just like Philly, this abandoned structure is part of a waterfront master plan.  They plan to do “an innovative redevelopment of Pointe-du-Moulin that will do the property justice and contribute to Montreal’s growth and reputation.“ Sound Familiar?

Edwin J. Schoettle/Independence Press Building, 11th & Green Streets, Callowhill, North Philly.

I can find surprisingly little about this building and Edwin J. Schoettle.

Edwin J. Schoettle was a yachtsman wrote books on sailing and had a publishing company. The building was sold in 2010 for 4 million bucks. Now it is up for sale for 7 million bucks

That’s all I got.

Multi-Unit Residential Building,1244 Ridge Ave., Poplar, North Philly.

Back in February I posted about maybe missing my opportunity to take pictures of these buildings because a big renovation project was announced for them. Well, it’s almost 6 months later and it’s crickets at the buildings.

I hope the project is just stalled and not dead like projects tend to get in Philly.

Quickie: Abandoned building on the edge of Chinatown.

Willow Street Steam Generation Plant, 9th and Willow Street, Callowhill/Eraserhood, North Philly.

This is one of those hulking ruins you see from 676 all the time, but never actually drive by the place itself. This huge building is tucked away by parking lots, food processing plants and a Union Hall on the edge of Callowhill and Chinatown.

According to the fabulous Workshop of the World Site, it was “built in 1927 by the Philadelphia Electric Company as part of Center City Philadelphia’s elaborate steam delivery system.”

Now it seems like the need for a giant asbestos cleanup is preventing a rush to use it for anything else.
